Who is the Elephant God Ganesh?

Ganesh, also spelled as Ganesha, and also known as Ganapati or Vinayaka, is widely worshipped across India as the lord of beginnings and the remover of obstacles. His birthday is celebrated over a ten-day festival called Ganesh Chaturthi. He is honored at the start of all rituals and ceremonies and many Hindus have a statue, painting or symbol to assist in praying to Ganesh at some time in their day.
